Running Pace Calculator — Pace, Time & Race Splits

Solve for pace, finish time, or distance from any two inputs. Presets for 5K through marathon, km/mile splits, and speed in km/h and mph—all in your browser.

A running pace calculator finds minutes per kilometer or mile, finish time, or distance when you know any two of time, distance, and pace—useful for 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon planning.

Pace calculations are mathematical estimates. Actual race performance varies by course elevation, weather, terrain, fatigue, and individual fitness level — use as planning estimates, not guaranteed finish times.

What is a running pace calculator?

Running pace is how long it takes to cover one unit of distance—usually minutes per kilometer (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mile). The core relationship is pace = time ÷ distance.

If you ran 5 km in 25 minutes, average pace is 5:00 per km (25 ÷ 5). If you know distance and target pace, multiply distance by pace to get finish time. If you know time and pace, divide time by pace to get distance traveled.

This tool switches between three solve modes (pace, time, distance), converts between metric and imperial using 1 mile = 1.609344 km, and shows companion speed in km/h and mph. Race presets use standard distances including exact half marathon (21.0975 km) and marathon (42.195 km) values. Splits list cumulative clock time at each kilometer or mile so you can compare even pacing to how you actually ran.

Enter any two of time, distance, and pace; get the third plus splits and race projections—runs locally, never uploaded.

How pace, time, and distance relate

Average pace equals total elapsed time divided by total distance; imperial and metric units convert via 1.609344 km per mile.

Formula

Pace (min/unit) = total minutes ÷ distance
Finish time = distance × pace
Distance = total minutes ÷ pace
1 mile = 1.609344 km

Assumptions

  • Pace is average over the full effort (not GPS instantaneous pace)
  • Distance entered matches the course you actually ran or plan to run

Limitations

  • Does not model hills, heat, or cardiac drift—use as planning math, not race-day guarantee
  • Treadmill display pace may differ slightly from GPS outdoor pace

How to use Running Pace Calculator — Pace, Time & Race Splits

  1. Choose what to calculate

Select Pace (from distance + time), Time (from distance + pace), or Distance (from time + pace).

  2. Enter distance or use a preset

Type distance in km or miles, or tap a chip for 5K, 10K, half marathon, or marathon.

  3. Enter time or pace

Use mm:ss (e.g. 25:30), hh:mm:ss for long efforts, or decimal minutes. Pace accepts formats like 5:00 per km or per mile.

  4. Read pace, speed, and projections

Results show min/km and min/mile, km/h and mph, projected finish times at standard race distances, and per-km or per-mile splits.

  5. Copy or reset

Copy the summary to your training log, or reset to try another scenario. Nothing leaves your browser.

Running Pace Calculator — Pace, Time & Race Splits examples

5K race result

Input

5 km in 24:30

Output

4:54 /km · ≈ 7:52 /mile

24.5 minutes ÷ 5 km = 4.9 min/km, displayed as 4:54 per km.

Marathon goal pace

Input

42.195 km at 5:30 /km

Output

≈ 3:52:04 finish

42.195 × 5.5 minutes ≈ 232 minutes (3 h 52 m) using the exact marathon distance preset.

30-minute tempo

Input

30:00 at 5:15 /km

Output

≈ 5.71 km

30 ÷ 5.25 ≈ 5.71 km covered if you hold 5:15 per km for the full half hour.

Who uses Running Pace Calculator — Pace, Time & Race Splits?

Common real-world scenarios where this tool saves time.

5K or 10K race planning

Convert a goal finish time into required average pace, then check per-km splits for even effort.

Half marathon and marathon pacing

Use exact 21.0975 km and 42.195 km presets to see clock-time targets at your training pace.

Treadmill and track sessions

Switch between min/km and min/mile and read km/h or mph without mental arithmetic mid-workout.

Workflow guides

Step-by-step chains that connect related tools for common tasks.

  1. Mode: Pace — enter 5 km and your 5K finish time.
  2. Note your min/km in the results panel.
  3. Switch to Time — select Marathon preset and enter that pace to see a projected marathon clock time.

  1. Mode: Pace — enter 10 km and goal finish time.
  2. Open Splits and view per-km cumulative times.
  3. Compare each km split to how you felt on race day to spot early surges.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the running pace calculator work?

Pick what you want to find—pace, finish time, or distance—then enter the other two. For example, distance and time give pace; distance and pace give finish time. Results show min/km and min/mile plus km/h and mph. All processing happens in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.

How do I calculate my 5K or 10K pace?

Choose Calculate Pace, enter 5 or 10 as distance (or tap the 5K/10K preset), then enter finish time as mm:ss (e.g. 25:30) or decimal minutes. You get average pace in min/km and min/mile.

What is min per km and min per mile?

Pace is minutes per unit of distance. 5 min/km means one kilometer every five minutes. The tool shows both metric and imperial and includes speed in km/h and mph. To convert: min/mile ≈ min/km × 1.609344.

Can I get a half marathon or marathon finish time from my pace?

Yes. Choose Calculate Time, enter the race distance (or use Half Marathon / Marathon chips), and your target pace. You get projected finish time plus estimated times for 5K, 10K, and other standard distances at that pace.

What is a good 5K pace for beginners?

Many beginners finish a 5K in 35–40 minutes (7–8 min/km). A comfortable aerobic pace allows conversation. Sub-30 minutes (6 min/km) is a common first racing goal as fitness improves.

Is this pace calculator free and private?

Yes. No signup required. Everything runs locally in your browser; no distance, time, or pace data is uploaded or stored on our servers.

Privacy, accuracy, and trust

Privacy

Running pace inputs are processed entirely in your browser. Distance, time, and pace are not uploaded or stored on EverydayTools servers during normal use.

Accuracy

Uses standard pace = time ÷ distance with 1.609344 km per mile; race presets use official half and full marathon distances.
