Flooring Calculator

How much flooring do I need for a room?

Flooring quantity is **floor area × (1 + waste%)**, rounded up to whole cartons using **sq ft per box** from the manufacturer label.

**Formula:**

Sq ft to order = Net floor sq ft × (1 + waste% / 100)

Boxes = ceil(Sq ft to order ÷ Sq ft per box)

**Example — 12×12 ft (144 sq ft), 10% waste, 20 sq ft/box:**

144 × 1.10 = 158.4 sq ft → **8 boxes** (160 sq ft)

**Example — 300 sq ft living room, 10% waste, 20 sq ft/box:**

330 sq ft → **17 boxes**

Flooring area and carton formula

Net floor area times waste buffer, divided by carton coverage for box count.

Formula

sq_ft_order = net_sq_ft × (1 + waste%); boxes = ceil(sq_ft_order / box_sq_ft)

Assumptions

  • Box sq ft matches manufacturer carton label.
  • Straight plank layout unless higher waste preset selected.

Limitations

  • Does not calculate underlayment rolls or transition strips.
  • Does not account for diagonal/herringbone beyond waste preset.

How to use Flooring Calculator

  1. Pick a room preset

Tap 12×12 bedroom, 15×20 living, or enter floor sq ft on the main form.

  2. Choose flooring type

LVP, laminate, diagonal, or herringbone presets set waste % on the main form.

  3. Enter sq ft per box

Read from the flooring carton — often 15–30 sq ft for click-lock planks.

  4. Read sq ft and cartons

Results show flooring to order, base area, carton count, and purchase guide.

  5. Pair with wall paint

Use Paint Calculator for walls in the same room remodel.

Who uses Flooring Calculator?

Common real-world scenarios where this tool saves time.

12×12 bedroom LVP

144 sq ft + 10% waste, 20 sq ft boxes = 8 cartons.

Open living 300 sq ft

330 sq ft with waste, 20 sq ft boxes = 17 cartons.

Best practices

Keep one spare carton

Acclimate before install

Common mistakes to avoid

Using wall paint area for flooring

Flooring uses **floor** sq ft inside walls — not wall surface area.

Skipping waste factor

End-row cuts always waste planks — **10% minimum** for straight layouts.

Mixing dye lots

Buy all cartons at once — production runs vary in shade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much flooring do I need for a 12×12 room?

144 sq ft floor area. With 10% waste (158 sq ft) and 20 sq ft boxes: 8 cartons.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

10% for straight LVP/laminate, 15% for diagonal, 15–20% for herringbone or complex layouts.

How many boxes of LVP do I need?

Divide total sq ft (with waste) by sq ft per box on the carton and round up.

What is sq ft per box?

Manufacturer coverage per carton — often printed on the box end flap (15–30 sq ft common).

Do I need underlayment?

Most floating floors require underlayment — calculate rolls separately; not included in this calculator.

Flooring vs tile for bathroom?

Use Tile Calculator for ceramic/porcelain sq ft and box count — tile needs different waste math for wet areas.

Can I use this for hardwood?

Yes — enter floor sq ft and sq ft per carton from your hardwood supplier.

How do I measure floor area?

Length × width inside walls, or use total sq ft mode. Subtract permanent islands only if not covering them.

Metric flooring calculation?

Switch to metric — enter m² and sq ft per box (or convert box label to m²).

Why round up cartons?

Plank cuts at walls always waste material — partial cartons are not sold.
