How much flooring do I need?
Measure each floor area and add the square footage, subtract any areas that will not be covered, then add a waste allowance. Divide the waste-adjusted area by the square feet covered by one box and round up to the next whole box.

How to measure flooring square footage
For a rectangle, multiply length by width. Add rooms together. For an L-shape, split the floor into rectangles. If you already have a takeoff in square feet, use known-area mode. Do not use wall surface area.
Multiple rooms and irregular rooms
Add a bedroom, living room, hallway, and closet as separate rooms when they share the same product. Closets are included only if you add them. They are never auto-subtracted.
Flooring waste / overage
Waste is not a universal 10% rule. LifeProof vinyl plank instructions recommend about 10% extra for standard layouts and 15% for diagonal layouts. Herringbone and cut-up rooms often need more. Your carton and install guide override any starting preset on this page.
Boxes and carton coverage
Flooring is sold in whole boxes. Coverage per carton is printed on the label and commonly falls between about 15 and 30 sq ft, but it is not fixed. This tool never treats 20 sq ft as a real product size unless you leave that placeholder in place. Planned waste and leftover from rounding up to full boxes are listed separately.
Vinyl plank / LVP calculation
The same area and box math applies to luxury vinyl plank. Many US click-lock products include an attached pad, so separate underlayment is optional unless the brand requires it. Enter the carton coverage from your LVP box.
Laminate flooring calculation
Laminate uses the same formulas. Confirm whether the product needs a separate underlayment or vapor barrier. Do not copy LVP pad rules onto a laminate carton that says otherwise.
Hardwood and engineered hardwood
Solid and engineered wood cartons also list coverage. Overage, acclimation, and fastening are mill-specific. This page estimates quantity only. It is not an installation manual.
Underlayment
Underlayment rolls are optional. A common US foam roll covers 100 sq ft; enter your roll’s printed coverage. Products with an attached pad may not need a second layer. Follow the flooring warranty, not a generic rule.
Flooring cost
Cost is optional and uses the prices you type, either per box or per square foot of purchased coverage. Material price is not an installed project price. Labor, transitions, and underlayment are separate lines when you fill them in.

The 12×12 row is 144 sq ft, then 144 × 1.10 = 158.4, then ceil(158.4 ÷ 20) = 8 boxes and 160 sq ft purchased. The 12×15 row is 180 → 198 → 10 boxes. The 15×20 row uses 24 sq ft boxes: 300 → 330 → 14 boxes.

Common mistakes
- Measuring walls instead of the floor.
- Forgetting closets that will be covered, or subtracting them by default.
- Subtracting cabinets or islands that you still plan to floor around incorrectly — or skipping a real island.
- Not splitting an L-shaped floor into rectangles.
- Guessing carton coverage instead of reading the label.
- Skipping waste, or using one waste percent for every pattern.
- Leaving a fractional box instead of rounding up.
- Mixing planned waste with leftover from whole-box rounding.
- Mixing feet and inches, or sq ft and m².
- Buying extra cartons later from a different dye lot.
- Assuming every floating floor needs separate underlayment.
- Treating material cost as a full installed price.

Should I include closets in flooring square footage?
Yes if you are flooring them. Add the closet as its own room. This calculator does not subtract closets.
Should I subtract kitchen cabinets?
Subtract only floors you will not cover, such as a fixed island or built-in. Base cabinets you install over still occupy floor you may choose not to cover.
How do I calculate flooring for an L-shaped room?
Split it into rectangles and add each section. The Add room control is for that.
Can I calculate multiple rooms at once?
Yes. Add or duplicate rooms for one combined box count when they share the same product.
How much vinyl plank flooring do I need?

Can this calculator estimate flooring cost?
Yes, if you enter local prices per box or per sq ft. It does not use a national average and it is not a labor quote unless you add a labor rate.
Does it support square meters?
Yes. Switch to Metric for m, cm, and m². Carton coverage converts with the unit toggle.
