What is an online notepad?

Use it for quick drafts, to-do lists, lecture notes, or copy/paste buffers when you want a plain textarea without installing software.

Notes autosave about one second after you stop typing into localStorage on this browser. Export as TXT, Markdown, or HTML; use find/replace, dark mode, or a temporary note that expires after 1–24 hours.

Nothing is synced across phones or computers—export a backup file if you need a copy elsewhere. For word counts and platform character limits, open the Word Counter after drafting.

Autosave · local only · export TXT/MD/HTML · optional temp-note expiry · not cross-device sync.

Quick answers

Concise answers for common searches — definitions, steps, and comparisons.

Does this online notepad autosave?

Yes—about one second after you stop typing, the note is saved to your browser’s localStorage on this device.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. Notes stay in your browser unless you explicitly share or export them. Share links put compressed text in the URL hash only.

Can I use this notepad offline?

Yes, after the page loads once. Autosave and editing work without an internet connection.

How to use Online notepad guide

  1. Start typing

Click the editor and type or paste plain text—autosave begins after one second of inactivity.

  2. Use toolbar or shortcuts

Format with Markdown helpers, find/replace (Ctrl+F), or the command palette (Ctrl+K).

  3. Export or copy

Download TXT, Markdown, or HTML; print for PDF; or copy all text to the clipboard.

  4. Clear or share

Generate a hash share link for small notes, or clear the note when finished—export first if you need a backup.

Input

Lecture notes with # headings and lists

Output

.md or .txt file download

Use Markdown export when moving notes into a docs repo or static site generator.

How autosave and storage work

Typed text is debounced and written to localStorage under a fixed key. Optional temporary notes also store an expiry timestamp. Share links encode note text in the URL hash (LZ-compressed)—still client-side.

Formula

Save trigger: 1 second after last keystroke. Storage: localStorage key + optional temp metadata JSON.

Assumptions

  • Modern browser with localStorage enabled (not private mode in some browsers).
  • Typical notes fit browser storage quotas (roughly 5–10 MB per origin).

Limitations

  • Clearing site data removes notes.
  • No encryption—anyone with access to this browser profile can read stored notes.
  • Not a password manager or secure vault.

Storage is per browser per device—export a file or use a share link to move text.

Storing passwords in the notepad

Use a dedicated password manager—localStorage is not encrypted.

Losing notes after clearing browser data

Download a .txt or .json backup before clearing cookies or site storage.
