Letter scale

Default scale: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60, and F below 60. Each number is the lowest percent for that letter. This is not an official school policy.

85%

Letter B on the scale above. 17 correct, 3 wrong.

(20 − 3) / 20 × 100 = 85%.

Each question is worth 5 points. One miss drops the score by that amount.

You can miss 4 of 20 and still earn a B (80%).

How do you calculate a grade from wrong answers?

An easy grader turns a raw quiz into a percent and a letter. Correct answers are total questions minus wrong answers. The score is that correct count divided by the total, times 100. The letter comes from the scale on the page. The default scale is A at 90, B at 80, C at 70, D at 60, and F below 60. Change those minimums if the class uses a different cut.

Wrong-answer score formula

Correct answers are calculated, not typed. The percent is exact. The letter is the highest band whose minimum is less than or equal to that percent.

Formula

Correct = Total − Wrong
Score = Correct ÷ Total × 100

Assumptions

  • Questions and wrong answers are whole numbers.
  • Each question has the same weight.
  • The default letter cuts are 90, 80, 70, and 60.

Limitations

  • This page does not average several assignments or compute GPA.
  • Partial credit, extra credit, and curved scores need a different entry.
  • The live chart lists every row through 100 questions. Longer tests show letter changes and the rows near your score.
  • The plus/minus preset is a common set of cuts, not a rule from your school.

How to use the grade calculator

  1. Enter the total questions

Use the number of items on the quiz or test. The count has to be a whole number of at least 1.

  2. Enter the wrong answers

Count only the items marked wrong. This cannot be higher than the total.

  3. Check the letter scale

Leave the default 90/80/70/60 cuts, or type the minimum percent your class uses for A, B, C, and D.

  4. Read the percent, letter, and chart

The chart lists wrong-answer counts. Long tests show the letter changes and the rows near your score instead of every row.

Quiz score examples

20 questions, 3 wrong

Input

Total 20, wrong 3

Output

85%, letter B

17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85. On the default scale, 85 is a B because A starts at 90.

10 questions, 2 wrong

Input

Total 10, wrong 2

Output

80%, letter B

8 ÷ 10 × 100 = 80. Eighty meets the B minimum and is not an A.

A perfect paper

Input

Total 25, wrong 0

Output

100%, letter A

No wrong answers means every question is correct.

Who uses Quiz Grade Calculator?

Common real-world scenarios where this tool saves time.

Students

Check a quiz before the grade book updates

Count the items marked wrong on a returned paper and read the percent without opening a spreadsheet.

Teachers

Show how many misses change the letter

Use the chart to show the class which wrong-answer counts still earn an A, B, C, or D on the scale you set.

Tutors

Score a short practice set

Enter the number of questions in a practice packet and the misses, then copy the percent for a session note.

Common mistakes to avoid

Typing the number correct into the wrong-answers field

The second field is misses, not correct answers. Correct answers are calculated as total minus wrong.

Treating 89 as an A on the default scale

The default A starts at 90. Eighty-nine is a B until you lower the A minimum.

Using this page for a weighted course average

Each question is equal here. Use the average grade calculator when assignments have different weights.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a test grade from the number wrong?

Divide the correct answers by the total questions and multiply by 100. Correct answers are the total minus the number wrong. Three wrong on a 20-question quiz is 85%.

What grade is 3 wrong out of 20?

Seventeen correct out of 20 is 85%. On the default scale that is a B, because A starts at 90.

What percent is 2 wrong out of 10?

Eight correct out of 10 is 80%.

Can I change the A, B, C, and D cutoffs?

Yes. Edit the minimum percent for each letter. F stays at 0 so every score still has a letter. The default cuts are a common US scale, not your school's official policy.

How many questions can I miss on a 20-question quiz and still get a B?

Four. Four wrong is 16 correct, and 16 ÷ 20 × 100 = 80%, the lowest B on the default scale. Five wrong is 75%, a C.

How many points is each question worth?

Divide 100 by the number of questions. A 20-question quiz gives 5 points per question. A 25-question quiz gives 4. A 40-question quiz gives 2.5.

Is this the same as the GPA calculator?

No. This page scores one quiz from a wrong-answer count. The GPA calculator turns course grades and credits into a grade point average.
