Required final

96.67%

You need 96.67% on the final, a A on the default 90/80/70/60 scale.

Current work kept: 80% × (1 − 0.30) = 56%. Required exam = (85% − 56%) ÷ 0.30 = 96.67%.

Live result. The course math updates as you type.

Exam score needed for A, B, C, and D from this current grade. The minimums come from the default 90/80/70/60 scale, even while you type percents.

How do you calculate the grade you need on a final?

The current grade is the average of the work already in the course. The exam weight is the share of the course the final is worth, entered as a percent and used as a decimal. The rest of the course keeps the current grade. Percentage mode uses the percents you type. Letter mode first converts each letter to the minimum percent on the scale you set, then uses the same formula.

Required final exam formula

The current grade fills every percent of the course that is not the final. The exam has to supply the rest of the desired course grade.

Formula

Required = (Desired − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight
Weight is the exam percent ÷ 100

Assumptions

  • The current grade is the average of all non-final work.
  • The final is one item worth the weight you enter.
  • Letter mode uses the minimum percent of each letter.

Limitations

  • A required score above 100% is shown, not rounded down to 100.
  • Extra credit, a curve, or a dropped test can change the real target.
  • This page does not calculate GPA or a single quiz from wrong answers.
  • A 0% weight cannot raise or lower the current grade.

How to use the final grade calculator

  1. Enter the current course grade

Use the percent already in the grade book, or pick the current letter.

  2. Enter the grade you want

Type the target course percent, or pick the letter you want to finish with.

  3. Enter the final exam weight

Use the percent from the syllabus, such as 30 for a final worth 30% of the course.

  4. Read the required exam score

The note tells you when the score is above 100%, already secured, or unchanged because the final has no weight.

Final exam examples

80 to an 85 with a 30% final

Input

Current 80, desired 85, weight 30%

Output

96.67%

Kept work is 80 × 0.70 = 56. (85 − 56) ÷ 0.30 = 96.666…, shown as 96.67%.

Target already covered

Input

Current 98, desired 70, weight 20%

Output

No positive exam score required

Even a 0 on the final leaves the course above 70, because 98 × 0.80 = 78.4.

Final worth nothing

Input

Current 80, desired 85, weight 0%

Output

The final cannot raise the grade

A zero-weight exam does not change the 80 already recorded.

Who uses Final Grade Calculator?

Common real-world scenarios where this tool saves time.

Students

See the exam score a target still needs

Enter the grade book average, the course grade you want, and the final's syllabus weight. An 80, an 85, and a 30% final needs 96.67%.

Teachers

Show when a goal is already secure

If the current work already covers the target even with a zero on the final, the result says the target is secured.

Students

Check a letter-only syllabus

Pick the current letter and the letter you want. The calculator uses the minimum percent of each letter on the scale you set.

Common mistakes to avoid

Entering the exam weight as a decimal and a percent

Type 30 for a final worth 30%. The formula converts that to 0.30.

Expecting a 0% final to raise the grade

A final with no weight leaves the current grade unchanged.

Using the current letter as the middle of the range

A B on the default scale is 80, the bottom of the B band, not 85.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate what you need on a final exam?

Subtract the current grade times the non-final share from the desired grade, then divide by the final's share of the course. Use the exam weight as a decimal: 30% is 0.30.

What final score do I need with an 80, a target of 85, and a 30% exam?

96.67%. The other 70% of the course keeps the 80, which is 56 points. The final has to supply the remaining 29 points out of 30.

What if the required final is over 100%?

The target cannot be reached if the exam is scored out of 100. The calculator still shows the raw required percent so you can see how far away the goal is.

What happens when the final is worth 0%?

The course grade stays at the current grade. If that grade is already at the target, the goal is met. If it is below the target, the final cannot close the gap.

What will my course grade be if I score 90 on the final?

Switch to “What will my grade be?” With an 80 now, a 90 on the exam, and a 30% final, the course grade is 80 × 0.70 + 90 × 0.30 = 83.

Is the final grade calculator a GPA calculator?

No. It solves one course's exam target or a predicted course grade. Use the GPA calculator when you need credit-weighted grade points across courses.
