Insulation Calculator

By Muhammad Abdullah Rauf · Founder, EverydayTools.proUpdated 2026-06-27

How much insulation do I need?

Insulation quantity is **net area × (1 + waste%)**, rounded up to whole batt bags using **sq ft per package** from the manufacturer label.

**Formula:**

Sq ft to order = Net area sq ft × (1 + waste% / 100)

Bags = ceil(Sq ft to order ÷ Sq ft per bag)

**Example — 1,200 sq ft attic, 10% waste, 40 sq ft/bag:**

1,320 sq ft → **33 bags**

Batt insulation area and bag formula

Net insulated area times waste buffer, divided by package coverage for bag count.

Formula

sq_ft_order = net_sq_ft × (1 + waste%); bags = ceil(sq_ft_order / bag_sq_ft)

Assumptions

  • Bag sq ft matches manufacturer label at stated R-value.
  • Uncompressed batt install unless rated for compression.

Limitations

  • Does not calculate blown-in depth or blower rental.
  • Does not verify code R-value requirements by climate zone.

How to use Insulation Calculator

  1. Pick an area preset

Tap 1,200 sq ft attic, 400 sq ft walls, or enter insulated sq ft on the main form.

  2. Choose batt type

R-13, R-19, or R-30 presets set bag size and waste on the main form.

  3. Enter sq ft per bag

Read from the batt label — often 40–58 sq ft depending on R-value.

  4. Deduct openings

Enable door and window deductions for wall cavity mode.

  5. Read sq ft and bags

Results show insulation to order, bag count, and purchase guide.

Insulation Calculator examples

1,200 sq ft · 10% · 40 sq ft bag

Input

Attic floor

Output

33 bags

1,320 ÷ 40 = 33 bags.

400 sq ft · 10% · 49 sq ft bag

Input

Wall cavity

Output

9 bags

440 ÷ 49 = 8.98 → 9 bags.

800 sq ft · 10% · 40 sq ft bag

Input

Crawl space

Output

22 bags

880 ÷ 40 = 22 bags.

144 sq ft · 10% · 40 sq ft bag

Input

12×12 room walls

Output

4 bags

158.4 ÷ 40 = 3.96 → 4 bags.

Who uses Insulation Calculator?

Common real-world scenarios where this tool saves time.

1,200 sq ft attic

1,320 sq ft with 10% waste, 40 sq ft bags = 33 bags.

400 sq ft exterior walls

Deduct 2 doors and 4 windows before bag count.

800 sq ft crawl space

Floor joist bays — 10% waste, R-19 batts.

Workflow guides

Step-by-step chains that connect related tools for common tasks.

Insulate an attic floor

  1. Measure attic floor sq ft.
  2. R-30 preset, 40 sq ft bag, 10% waste.
  3. Lay batts between joists without compression.
  4. Estimate drywall if finishing walls. Drywall Calculator

Best practices

Vapor barrier on warm side

Fill without gaps

Common mistakes to avoid

Compressing batts into shallow cavities

Match R-value to cavity depth — R-13 for 2×4, R-19 for 2×6.

Skipping waste factor

Cuts around pipes and corners always waste material — **10% minimum**.

Using wall paint area for attic

Attic uses **floor** sq ft; walls use perimeter × height minus openings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much insulation do I need for a 1,200 sq ft attic?

1,200 sq ft with 10% waste (1,320 sq ft) and 40 sq ft bags: 33 bags.

How much extra insulation should I buy?

10% for batts in open bays; 15% for blown-in or complex framing.

What is sq ft per batt bag?

Manufacturer coverage per package at stated R-value — often 40–58 sq ft on the label.

R-13 vs R-19 — which do I need?

R-13 fits 2×4 walls; R-19 fits 2×6 walls or floors. Check local energy code.

When should I deduct openings for wall insulation?

Enable door and window deductions for exterior wall cavity estimates — attic floor mode uses gross floor area without openings.

Insulation vs drywall order?

Insulate cavities before drywall — use Drywall Calculator for sheet count after.

Can I use this for blown-in?

Enter bag coverage from blown-in packaging; use 15% waste preset for attic blow.

How do I measure attic floor area?

Length × width of insulated floor, or enter total sq ft in area mode.

Metric insulation calculation?

Switch to metric — enter m² and sq ft per bag from the label.

Why round up bags?

Partial batts are not sold — always round up to whole packages.
