How do I scale a recipe to more or fewer servings?

Recipe scaling is **new servings ÷ original servings** applied to every ingredient.

**Formula:**

Scale factor = New servings ÷ Original servings

Scaled amount = Original amount × Scale factor

**Example — 4 → 8 servings, 2 cups flour:**

8 ÷ 4 = **×2** → **4 cups flour**

Recipe serving scale formula

Ratio of new to original servings applied uniformly to ingredients.

Formula

scale_factor = new_servings / original_servings; scaled = amount × scale_factor

Assumptions

  • Uniform scaling — no pan size change.
  • Baking may need pan conversion separately.

Limitations

  • Does not adjust leavening or spice nonlinearly.
  • Use Cake Pan Converter for different pan sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I double a recipe?

Set new servings to twice original (4→8). Scale factor is ×2 — multiply every ingredient by 2.

How do I halve a recipe?

New servings = half of original. Scale factor ×0.5.

Can I scale baking recipes?

Yes for servings, but pan size and leavening may need adjustment. Use Cake Pan Converter for different tins.

Do spices scale the same way?

Most home cooks scale spices linearly; reduce slightly if doubling very spicy dishes.

Recipe scaler vs baking conversion?

Scaler changes amounts; Baking Conversion converts cups to grams.

How to scale 4 servings to 6?

Factor = 6÷4 = 1.5. Multiply each ingredient by 1.5.

Should I scale yeast the same?

For large batch changes, some bakers reduce yeast slightly — this tool scales linearly as a starting point.

Metric recipe scaling?

Works with any unit — multiply the number; keep the same unit label.

How to scale soup for a crowd?

Enter guest-based servings or multiply original servings to match headcount.

Is scaling exact for eggs?

Round to practical measures — half an egg may mean one beaten egg divided in two.
