How much sod do I need for my lawn?

Sod coverage is **lawn area ÷ pallet coverage**. Measure turf area only — subtract beds, driveway, and hardscape.

**Pallet formula:**

Pallets needed = Lawn area (sq ft) ÷ Sq ft per pallet

**Example — 1,000 sq ft lawn, 450 sq ft pallets:**

1,000 ÷ 450 = **2.22 pallets** → order **3 pallets** with buffer

**Roll formula (optional):**

Rolls = Remaining sq ft ÷ Sq ft per roll

**Example — 25 sq ft patch, 10 sq ft rolls:**

25 ÷ 10 = **3 rolls** (round up)

**Metric:**

Convert m² to sq ft (× 10.764) or enter area in m² if your supplier quotes per square meter.

**Example — 500 m² lawn, 42 m² per pallet:**

500 ÷ 42 = **11.9 pallets** → order 12–13 with buffer

US sod pallets typically cover **400–500 sq ft** depending on grass species, pallet size, and farm. **Read the tag** on each pallet before ordering. Install sod **the same day** it arrives — stacked pallets heat up and dry out quickly.

Sod pallet coverage formula

The calculator divides net turf area by sq ft per pallet (user-entered from supplier tag). An optional trim buffer increases order quantity for edges, seams, and waste.

Formula

pallets = ceil(lawn sq ft ÷ sq ft per pallet × (1 + buffer%))  |  rolls = ceil(remaining sq ft ÷ sq ft per roll)

Assumptions

  • Lawn area is flat and measured as a single footprint or rectangle.
  • Pallet coverage matches the supplier tag on delivery day.
  • Roll size is optional — used for patch repairs alongside pallets.

Limitations

  • Does not estimate sod weight, delivery fees, or installation labor.
  • Irregular lawns with many curves need a higher trim buffer.
  • Does not account for grass species shrinkage between harvest and install.

How to use Sod Calculator

  1. Measure turf area only

Use lawn presets or enter length × width or total square footage. Subtract planting beds, patio, driveway, and walkways — order sod for grass zones only.

  2. Confirm sq ft per pallet

Tap a pallet preset (400, 450, or 500 sq ft) or enter the exact number from your sod farm tag. Warm-season bermuda and zoysia pallets may run larger.

  3. Add optional roll size

Enter sq ft per roll if buying big-box rolls for edges or patch repair — often 9–10 sq ft. Leave blank to skip roll count.

  4. Enable trim buffer

Turn on the trim & overlap buffer for irregular lawns, curved borders, and seam overlap. Ten percent is the default; complex shapes may need 15%.

  5. Read pallets and delivery guidance

Results show pallets to order (rounded up), optional roll count, and delivery tips. Schedule install the same day sod arrives.

Sod Calculator examples

1,000 sq ft · 450 sq ft pallet

Input

1,000 sq ft ÷ 450 sq ft/pallet

Output

2.22 pallets → 3 with buffer

Round up — partial pallets are not sold. Buffer covers trim and seams.

50×20 ft rectangle

Input

50 ft × 20 ft = 1,000 sq ft

Output

Same as 1,000 sq ft area mode

Rectangle and area modes give identical results when area matches.

2,500 sq ft suburban lawn

Input

2,500 sq ft ÷ 450

Output

5.56 pallets → 6–7 ordered

10% buffer: 2,500 × 1.10 ÷ 450 = 6.1 → 7 pallets.

500 m² metric lawn

Input

500 m² ÷ 42 m²/pallet

Output

~12 pallets

Enter metric area when supplier quotes per square meter.

Who uses Sod Calculator?

Common real-world scenarios where this tool saves time.

Suburban front yard

1,000 sq ft lawn ÷ 450 sq ft/pallet = 2.22 → 3 pallets with 10% buffer. Plan same-day install and pre-irrigate soil 24 hours ahead.

Full backyard re-sod

2,500 sq ft ÷ 450 = 5.56 pallets → 6–7 pallets. Confirm truck access for pallet drops and have helpers ready — sod dries fast in summer heat.

Quarter-acre lot

10,890 sq ft ÷ 500 sq ft/pallet = 21.8 → 22–24 pallets. Large jobs often need multiple truck loads — coordinate delivery sequence with install crew.

Patch repair with rolls

50 sq ft bare spot ÷ 10 sq ft/roll = 5 rolls. Rolls suit small repairs; full lawns are more economical per sq ft on pallets.

Best practices

Prep soil before delivery

Stagger seams like brickwork

Roll after install

Common mistakes to avoid

Ordering sod for the entire lot including driveway

Measure **turf only**. Subtract concrete, beds, and pool deck before dividing by pallet coverage.

Assuming all pallets are 450 sq ft

Pallet size varies 400–500 sq ft by farm and species. **Read the tag** — using the wrong number causes short orders.

Letting sod sit on the pallet

Install **same day**. Stacked sod heats up and yellows within 24–48 hours in summer.

Skipping the trim buffer on curved lawns

Irregular edges and seam overlap waste 10–15% of material. Enable buffer or round pallets up.

Mixing sod from different farms

Color and blade width vary between growers. Order all pallets from one farm and one harvest date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pallets of sod do I need for 1,000 square feet?

Divide 1,000 by sq ft per pallet. At 450 sq ft/pallet: 1,000 ÷ 450 = 2.22 pallets. Round up to 3 with a trim buffer for edges and seams.

How much sod is on a pallet?

US sod pallets typically cover 400–500 sq ft depending on grass species and farm. Read the tag on each pallet — do not assume 450 sq ft without checking.

How many square feet is a roll of sod?

Big-box retail rolls are often 9–10 sq ft each. Farm big rolls for commercial install can be 40–100+ sq ft. Enter your roll size on the calculator.

How much extra sod should I order?

Add 5–10% for rectangular lawns and 10–15% for curved borders, slopes, and complex shapes. The trim buffer on the calculator defaults to 10%.

Should I buy sod by the pallet or roll?

Pallets are economical for full lawns. Rolls suit patch repairs and small strips. For 1,000+ sq ft, pallets almost always cost less per square foot.

When is the best time to install sod?

Cool-season grass: early fall or spring when soil is warm and rain is steady. Warm-season: late spring through summer. Avoid mid-winter frozen ground or peak summer drought without irrigation.

How do I prepare soil before sod?

Remove weeds, till 2–4 in, grade for drainage away from structures, and lightly compact. Use the Topsoil Calculator if you need to add fill or leveling material first.

Can I use sand under sod seams?

A thin layer of leveling sand at seams helps close gaps on uneven soil. Use the Sand Calculator for seam leveling volume — it is separate from topsoil prep.
