How much sand do I need for paver bedding?

Sand volume is **area × depth**. For paver patios and leveling projects, measure footprint in feet and bedding depth in inches.

**Imperial formula (rectangle):**

Cubic yards = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ **324**

**Example — 10×10 ft patio, 2 in bedding sand:**

10 × 10 × 2 ÷ 324 = **0.62 cubic yards** (16.7 cu ft)

**Paver screed layer:**

Most paver installs use **1 in** screeded leveling sand over compacted gravel base.

**Example — 10×10 ft patio, 1 in screed:**

100 × 1 ÷ 12 = **8.3 cu ft** (~0.31 cu yd)

**Round patio (circle):**

Volume = π × (radius ft)² × depth (ft)

**Coverage shortcut:** At 2 in depth, **1 cubic yard covers ~162 sq ft**. At 1 in screed, one yard covers ~324 sq ft.

**Metric formula:**

Volume (m³) = Area (m²) × Depth (cm) ÷ 100

Bedding sand is sold **bulk by the cubic yard** or in **bagged cubic feet** (often 0.5 cu ft play sand). Add **5–15% extra** for screed loss and spillage. **Base gravel is separate** — use the Gravel Calculator for crushed stone under sand.

Sand bedding volume formula

The calculator treats the sanded zone as a flat rectangular prism, total area × depth, or cylinder for round patios. An optional buffer increases order quantity for screed loss and spillage.

Assumptions

  • Sand is screeded to uniform depth over a compacted base.
  • Volume is loose sand before compaction — not mortar or concrete mix.
  • Round patios are approximated as flat circles.

Limitations

  • Does not include base gravel, edge restraint, or polymeric joint sand.
  • Does not model slopes or crowned drainage grades.
  • Fill sand for structural purposes needs engineering specs beyond this estimator.

  2. Measure patio or bed footprint

Skipping crushed gravel base under sand

Bedding sand alone is not structural. Pavers need **3–4 in compacted angular gravel** under the sand layer — calculate separately.

Using play sand for paver bedding

Use **concrete sand or paver sand** — coarse, angular, and free-draining. Fine play sand does not screed or drain properly.

Screeding sand too deep

Bedding sand over 1–2 in settles unevenly. Deep sand causes paver rocking — keep screed layer thin and level.

Confusing bedding sand with polymeric joint sand

This calculator estimates **bedding/screed volume**. Joint sand between pavers is a small separate quantity brushed into gaps after install.

Not compacting base before screeding

Plate-compact gravel base before laying sand. Soft base causes pavers to settle after rain.
