How many fence panels do I need?

Fence materials are **panels = ceil(linear ft with waste ÷ panel width)** and **posts = ceil(linear ft ÷ post spacing) + 1**.

**Formula:**

Linear ft = Fence length × (1 + waste% / 100)

Panels = ceil(Linear ft ÷ Panel width)

Posts = ceil(Linear ft ÷ Post spacing) + 1

**Example — 100 ft run, 8 ft panels, 10% waste:**

110 linear ft → **14 panels**, **15 posts**

Fence panel and post count formula

Linear feet with waste divided by panel width; posts from spacing plus end post.

Formula

panels = ceil(linear_ft × (1+waste%) / panel_width); posts = ceil(linear_ft / spacing) + 1

Assumptions

  • Straight runs on level ground.
  • Panel width matches pre-assembled section size.

Limitations

  • Does not calculate gate width or hardware.
  • Slopes and stepped panels need manual adjustment.

How to use Fence Calculator

  1. Pick a run preset

    Tap 100 ft run, 50×30 backyard perimeter, or enter length on the main form.

  2. Enter panel width

    8 ft is standard wood or vinyl privacy panels — 6 ft for picket.

  3. Set post spacing

    Usually matches panel width — one post per panel plus end post.

  4. Add waste buffer

    10% for straight runs; 15% for corners, gates, and cuts.

  5. Read panels and posts

    Results show panel count, post count, and linear feet with waste.

Who uses Fence Calculator?

Common real-world scenarios where this tool saves time.

100 ft privacy run

110 linear ft with 10% waste, 8 ft panels = 14 panels, 15 posts.

50×30 backyard

160 ft perimeter — 20 panels at 8 ft with 10% waste.

40 ft garden enclosure

6 ft picket panels — smaller sections, tighter spacing.

Build a privacy fence

  1. Measure run length along property line.
  2. 8 ft panels, 8 ft post spacing, 10% waste.
  3. Set posts in concrete; attach panels.

Common mistakes to avoid

Forgetting the end post

Posts = sections + 1 — always add a post at the run end.

Using fence length without waste

Corners and gate posts need **10% minimum** extra linear ft.

Ignoring property setbacks

Check local code for fence height and setback before digging.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many fence panels for 100 feet?

With 8 ft panels and 10% waste (110 linear ft): 14 panels and 15 posts.

How do I calculate fence posts?

Posts = ceil(linear ft ÷ post spacing) + 1. Example: 110 ÷ 8 = 13.75 → 14 sections + 1 = 15 posts.

What is standard panel width?

8 ft for wood and vinyl privacy fence; 6 ft for picket sections.

How much extra fencing should I buy?

10% for straight runs; 15% when you have corners, a gate, or grade changes.

Perimeter vs run length mode?

Perimeter adds both sides of a rectangle (2×length + 2×width). Run length is one straight side.

Fence vs concrete for posts?

Use Concrete Calculator for cubic feet or bags per post hole.

Do I need gravel under posts?

Gravel base aids drainage — use Gravel Calculator for base volume separately.

Wood vs vinyl panel count?

Same math — enter panel width from your supplier (usually 8 ft).

How do I account for a gate?

Subtract gate width from run length or add 15% waste preset for extra posts and cuts.

Why round up panels?

Partial panels are not sold — always round up to whole sections.
